SPECIAL ATTENTION FOR GOALKEEPERS
Started in 1993 by Jim Walker, the Keeper! Club is the Dynamos' built-in support system for goalkeepers. Seeds for the Keeper! Club began even earlier when Coach Walker began working with young keepers like Scott Edwards, Brandon Renken, and Kaissar Najjar on a regular basis when he first joined the Cy-Fair Youth Soccer Club as Director of Training in 1991. It was originally formed to accommodate boys and girls ten years and older. However, because a large number of younger players expressed interest in learning the basic tools of the position, a junior branch was formed. Although he has since retired as Director of Training, Coach Walker still directs regular goalkeeper training, presiding over three weekly sessions, including one for recreational boys and girls under the age of 10. Former members Heather Koudelka, Kevin Atnip, Michael Sicola, and John Kowalczyk, all now college keepers, attend when they can and assist at special keeper camps.
'Our goalkeepers have plenty of role models,' says Coach Walker. 'The camaraderie, within their group and with the people we bring in, is almost as important as the training.” Boys and girls who want to excel at this special position find knowledgeable people who will discuss the position without laying blame on them, and other goalkeepers with whom they can share problems and success stories. The main goal is to challenge them to technical and tactical improvement so they can help their teams, but the training environment enables those with exceptional talent to reach their highest potential. At training sessions, young goalkeepers are urged to strive toward becoming 'perfect within their range,' to make decisions that enable them to collect the ball in the most efficient manner possible, and to put forth the effort to execute all saves with proper technique. Through hard work at training and daily practice, they slowly but steadily extend their range and take on more advanced techniques. For additional information about the Keeper! Club, e-mail Jim.Walker@goalkeeper.com, or call 281-217-1612.
